A 35-year-old Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), Adediji Sesan, has died after being hit by a vehicle along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Ayoade Idowu, has been arrested and detained by the police over the incident.

Sesan was reportedly on routine patrol with his team when he attempted to stop a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX for document inspection.

An eyewitness said the driver initially stopped but allegedly drove off when asked to present the required documents, hitting the officer in the process.

The victim sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where a doctor confirmed him dead. His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said the driver was in custody while preliminary investigations continued.

Abayomi added that police operatives had visited the scene and that the case file was expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.

He expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and associates, assuring them that a thorough investigation would be conducted and appropriate legal action taken.

The police spokesperson also urged motorists to obey lawful traffic instructions and cooperate with authorised enforcement officers, warning against endangering lives to evade routine checks.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to road safety, the protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order across the state.
