Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration would operate as a unity government if he wins a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
Akpabio made the statement during Wednesday’s Senate plenary while commenting on the composition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, which includes political figures affiliated with opposition parties.
He described the inclusion of politicians from different parties as an important development in Nigeria’s democratic process, arguing that cooperation across party lines could strengthen national unity and governance.

According to the Senate President, the campaign council’s composition reflects an emerging political arrangement that could influence the structure of a second Tinubu administration.
Akpabio said the involvement of opposition figures demonstrated that political differences should not prevent individuals from contributing to national development.
He commended President Tinubu, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and leaders of other political parties involved in the campaign arrangement.
The Senate President also acknowledged Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike for their reported roles in the campaign structure.
Akpabio maintained that competence and the ability to contribute to governance should not be judged solely by political affiliation.
“This is the way Nigeria should be,” he said.
Earlier, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the campaign council as a significant departure from conventional party-based campaign structures.
He said the arrangement brought together political figures associated with the APC, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord Party.
According to Bamidele, Soludo and Adeleke were named state campaign coordinators, while Wike was assigned responsibility for coordinating campaign activities in the Federal Capital Territory.
Bamidele described the arrangement as a “rainbow coalition”, saying cooperation among politicians from different parties could promote national interests despite their political differences.
He also called for a campaign focused on policies, ideas and democratic principles.

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, who represents Benue South under the PDP, subsequently seconded Bamidele’s motion for the Senate to adjourn until Thursday.
Although Akpabio expressed confidence that the coalition could form the basis of a unity government, the proposed arrangement remains dependent on the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
Tinubu has not secured a second term, and the eventual composition of any future administration has yet to be determined.
