President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, warning that both challenges pose a serious threat to workers’ welfare, productivity, and the country’s overall stability.

The declaration was made on Friday during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at Eagle Square in Abuja, where the President addressed thousands of Nigerian workers and labour leaders.

Tinubu said the twin crises were undermining economic activities and eroding the foundation of decent work across the country. He stressed that insecurity disrupts key sectors including agriculture, trade, and industry while poverty continues to weaken purchasing power and living standards.

“Insecurity and poverty remain significant obstacles to achieving a peaceful and productive Nigeria,” the President said, noting that both issues directly affect jobs, livelihoods, and investor confidence.

The President acknowledged the hardship faced by Nigerians, assuring workers that his administration is implementing targeted reforms and social investment programmes aimed at restoring stability and improving living conditions. He added that ongoing efforts are focused on job creation and strengthening national security.

Tinubu also called for sustained dialogue between the government and organised labour, urging unions to prioritise negotiation over industrial action.

However, labour leaders painted a grim picture of the nation’s economic situation, warning that Nigeria is approaching a critical tipping point marked by rising inflation, insecurity, and declining real wages.

Organised labour groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have continued to demand improved wages and better working conditions, citing the growing cost-of-living crisis affecting workers nationwide.
