The Akwa Ibom State Government has highlighted significant strides in workers’ welfare under the administration of Governor Umo Eno, reaffirming its commitment to sustaining and improving labour-friendly policies.

The Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, made this known on Friday, May 1, 2026, while featuring on live interviews on Arise TV, XL FM, and Comfort FM to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.

Umanah noted that Governor Eno has demonstrated a strong commitment to workers’ welfare through the implementation of a ₦80,000 minimum wage, surpassing the national benchmark of ₦70,000. He added that the administration has also cleared over ₦78 billion in pensions and gratuities owed to retired civil servants before 2023.

According to him, other worker-focused initiatives include the introduction of a 13th-month salary package, popularly known as “Eno-mber,” provision of free housing for low-income civil servants, and consistent, prompt payment of salaries.

He stated that these efforts have earned the governor commendation from labour unions and civil servants, while assuring that the government remains committed to doing more.

“Governor Eno appreciates all workers, both in the public and private sectors, for their patience, resilience, and contributions to the growth and development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria,” Umanah said.

“As we celebrate International Workers’ Day, we urge all workers to remain diligent and committed to their duties. Together, we must continue to work towards advancing the ARISE Agenda and taking Akwa Ibom to greater heights.

“As a government, we will continue to prioritise workers’ welfare and ensure the provision of a conducive working environment,” he added.

Speaking further on aviation and tourism development, the Commissioner revealed that the commencement of international flights at the Victor Attah International Airport (VAIA) will position Akwa Ibom as a major aviation hub in West and Central Africa.

He disclosed that following the recent approval of the airport’s international status, the inaugural international flight—scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026—will connect Uyo to Accra, Ghana, via Ibom Air.

Umanah explained that the development will open up broader economic opportunities, enhance tourism, and boost regional connectivity.

He commended Governor Eno for substantial investments in aviation infrastructure, including a new terminal building, maintenance facilities, upgraded security systems, and the establishment of full customs and immigration services at the airport.

According to him, the airport is designed as a smart facility capable of driving business, tourism, and international travel across the Gulf of Guinea.

“Apart from the anticipated economic and tourism benefits, the job creation and training opportunities for aviation professionals are enormous,” he said.

He further lauded the administration’s strategic investments, including the acquisition of additional aircraft for Ibom Air and the development of an Aviation Village.

Umanah also acknowledged the governor’s efforts in building on the achievements of previous administrations, noting that such continuity has elevated the state’s development profile.
