The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria has effectively resolved the protracted leadership dispute within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), paving the way for reconciliation and stability in the party.

Speaking in reaction to the apex court’s verdict, Wike said the judgment has brought finality to the lingering crisis that had divided the party into factions following disputes over the legitimacy of its national convention and leadership structure.

The Supreme Court ruling, which addressed appeals arising from the contested PDP convention, upheld earlier decisions that invalidated the factional processes, thereby reinforcing the position recognised by the courts. The legal battle had centred on the legitimacy of a convention organised by a rival faction within the party.

Wike described the judgment as decisive, stressing that it removes all ambiguities surrounding the party’s leadership and provides a clear path forward. He noted that with the legal uncertainties now resolved, the PDP must focus on internal reconciliation and rebuilding unity ahead of future political engagements.

According to him, the party leadership will remain vigilant in ensuring that the post-judgment phase is managed carefully to prevent further divisions. He emphasised that reconciliation efforts will be intensified to bring aggrieved members back into the fold and strengthen the party’s cohesion.

The PDP has been embroiled in a prolonged internal crisis, with multiple court cases challenging the outcome of its convention and the emergence of party executives. The dispute created parallel structures and deepened divisions among key stakeholders.

Wike reiterated that the PDP remains a formidable political platform, expressing confidence that the party can overcome its internal challenges and reposition itself as a strong opposition force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Political observers say the Supreme Court’s decision represents a turning point for the opposition party, which has struggled to present a united front in recent years. With the legal tussle now settled, attention is expected to shift toward reorganisation, reconciliation, and preparations for upcoming electoral contests.
