Vice President Kashim Shettima has met with Nigerians in the Diaspora in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The engagement focused on the role of Nigerians abroad in national development, investment, skills transfer and advancing the country’s economic and diplomatic interests.
During a diaspora town hall at Nigeria House in New York, Shettima also highlighted the economic contribution of Nigerians abroad, saying diaspora remittances were strengthening the country’s external position.
The Vice President is in New York representing President Bola Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
He is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate on Thursday, outlining the country’s positions on major international issues and the administration’s priorities on reform, development, peace and multilateral cooperation.
Shettima was joined at the diaspora engagement by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum; Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara; Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal; and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
Also present were the spouses of the governors of Kwara, Katsina, Abia and Osun states.
Members of the Federal Executive Council at the meeting included Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Kingsley Udeh; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Bernard Doro; Minister of Education Tunji Alausa; Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake; Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite; and Minister of State for the FCT Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim; Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Lateef Kayode Are; heads of government agencies; and senior officials of Nigeria’s missions in the United States were also present.
