Tennis legend, Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Wimbledon doubles competition after sustaining a knee injury during the tournament.

The 44-year-old was scheduled to partner her sister, Venus Williams, in the doubles event after receiving a wildcard entry from the tournament organisers.

Williams suffered the injury during her singles match on Tuesday. Although her team initially expressed optimism that she would still compete in doubles, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion announced on Saturday that she was no longer fit to continue.

In a post shared on Instagram, Williams expressed disappointment over the decision, saying she had hoped to reunite with her sister on the Wimbledon courts.

“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me,” she wrote.

The former world No. 1 revealed that doctors drained fluid from her injured knee in an effort to speed up her recovery but said it was not enough to make her match-ready.

“I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete,” she added.

Williams, however, offered encouraging news about her recovery, noting that the swelling is expected to subside and thanking Wimbledon organisers and fans for their support.

She also hinted at a possible return to competitive tennis, telling supporters to “stay tuned to a city near you.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, Williams has won 13 Wimbledon titles, including seven singles crowns and six women’s doubles championships alongside her sister, Venus.

Since stepping away from full-time competition in 2022, Williams has largely focused on family life while raising her two daughters, though she has maintained that she is “evolving away” from tennis rather than officially retiring from the sport.
