The Senate has urged the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to intensify public enlightenment campaigns aimed at addressing what lawmakers described as the growing culture of indiscipline in Nigeria, particularly among young people.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Dachung Pam Mwadkon (Plateau North), who raised concerns over increasing cases of social disorder and disregard for civic norms across the country.

Leading the debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for a renewed national orientation drive to promote discipline, rule of law, and responsible citizenship, warning that indiscipline is a key driver of insecurity.

He stressed that societal order must begin at the family level, noting that many Nigerians comply with laws abroad but fail to uphold the same standards at home.

“Discipline should start from the home. Nigerians travel abroad and obey the rules in other countries, yet many disregard the same standards at home,” Akpabio said.

He urged the NOA to step up efforts in rebuilding civic values, especially among children and young people, to curb the rising incidence of social vices.

In his presentation, Senator Mwadkon highlighted growing manifestations of indiscipline, including traffic violations, vandalism, public disorder, disregard for lawful authority, political intolerance, protocol breaches at public events, and misuse of social media.

He warned that these trends are weakening institutions, eroding public trust, and contributing significantly to insecurity across the country.

According to him, if left unchecked, the situation could further undermine national security, economic growth, education, social stability, and democratic governance.

Lawmakers agreed that stronger civic education and sustained value reorientation are essential to reversing the trend and restoring order in society.
