Three United States Secret Service officials who are not law enforcement personnel have been placed on leave pending an investigation into alleged potential misconduct.
The development was disclosed by a Secret Service spokesperson, although the agency has not revealed what prompted the investigation or identified the officials involved.
Among those reportedly placed on leave is the agency’s communications director, Anthony Guglielmi, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
However, Guglielmi’s spokesperson, Gregg Bernstein, did not directly confirm that he had been placed on leave.
Bernstein described Guglielmi as “a professional of deep integrity” with decades of public service advocating for local, state and federal agencies.
“He holds profound respect for the mission and work of the United States Secret Service and is cooperating fully with everything being asked of him,” Bernstein said in a statement.
The investigation was first reported by CNN.
In its statement, the Secret Service did not provide details about the nature of the alleged misconduct or disclose the identities of the three officials.
The agency said it would continue to uphold the standards expected of an organisation responsible for protecting the President and other senior government officials.
“The U.S. Secret Service is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in fulfilling our zero-fail mission of protecting the President and other high-level government officials,” the agency said.
The spokesperson added that the agency’s mission required its workforce to maintain an unwavering commitment to duty, honesty and courage in all aspects of their responsibilities.
Guglielmi was appointed communications director of the Secret Service in March 2022.
Later that year, he testified before the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, where he addressed testimony by former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.
The Secret Service has not indicated how long the investigation will last or whether disciplinary action will follow its conclusion.
