The United States has delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Armed Forces to support counterterrorism operations in the country.
The equipment was transported to Nigerian Air Force facilities in Lagos and Kainji, Niger State, in September aboard a US Air Force C-17 aircraft, according to the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM said the delivery was made under a foreign military sales agreement between the United States and Nigeria.
The command said the support was aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism while emphasising that the assistance was provided at Nigeria’s request and in accordance with the country’s sovereignty.
The development follows a recent decision by the US to reduce its military presence in Nigeria after an operation in May that reportedly killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, identified by US officials as a senior ISIS figure in the Lake Chad Basin.
Despite the planned drawdown of the larger US contingent, small teams of American military trainers and intelligence personnel are expected to remain in Nigeria through the end of September.
US officials have described the Nigeria operation as a possible model for future American counterterrorism engagements in Africa.
