Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, as a major loss to Nigeria’s creative and entertainment industry.
Jacobs, who was 84, died on Wednesday, according to an announcement by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu described the late actor as one of the respected pioneers of Nollywood whose influence extended across theatre, television and film.
The governor said Jacobs’ contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry would endure through his body of work and the impact he made on audiences over the course of his career.
Sanwo-Olu said the late actor used his talent and theatrical craft to entertain audiences, inspire people and contribute positively to society.
He described Jacobs as a legendary actor and filmmaker who appeared in numerous British and Nigerian television productions and films.
According to the governor, Jacobs played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s theatre, television and film industries over more than five decades.
Sanwo-Olu said the actor’s artistry, creativity and dedication had established a legacy that would continue to influence younger generations of performers and filmmakers.
He added that Jacobs would be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, fans and others who admired his work and contribution to Nigerian entertainment.
The governor extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, his children and other members of the family, as well as colleagues and stakeholders in the entertainment industry.
Sanwo-Olu also prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul and asked God to grant his family and members of the creative community the strength to cope with the loss.
He urged those mourning the veteran actor to draw comfort from the enduring legacy he left through his decades of work in the entertainment industry.
