A Paris court has awarded reality television star Kim Kardashian €1 in compensation over the 2016 armed robbery in which jewellery worth more than $6 million was stolen from her in the French capital.
The symbolic amount was the compensation Kardashian requested in the case, according to a lawyer involved in the proceedings.
Kardashian was staying at the Hôtel de Pourtalès in October 2016 when armed members of a robbery gang, reportedly disguised as police officers, entered her suite, restrained her and stole several pieces of jewellery.
Among the items taken was a diamond ring Kardashian had worn earlier that evening to a Givenchy fashion show.
The court’s latest decision followed the conviction last year of eight people over their alleged roles in the robbery.
Kardashian had previously described the incident as one of the most frightening experiences of her life.
Following the court’s ruling, Kardashian and her stylist, Simone Harouche, who was also present during the incident, expressed appreciation to the French justice system.
They said the robbery had been deeply traumatic and that its effects had remained with them over the years.
The pair said the compensation was less important to them than the court’s recognition of the case and the issue of accountability.
The court also awarded €109,516 in damages to a former hotel receptionist who was affected by the robbery, according to his lawyer.
The receptionist had sought €550,000 in damages and interest over the trauma he said he suffered during the incident.
His lawyer, Mohand Ouidja, welcomed the court’s decision.
The robbery attracted widespread attention in France, with the suspects becoming known as “les papys braqueurs,” or “grandpa robbers”, because of the advanced ages of several of those prosecuted.
Six of the defendants were reportedly in their 60s and 70s and faced charges including armed robbery, kidnapping and participation in a criminal group.
Although those convicted had already spent time in pre-trial detention, none was returned to prison following the verdict, and no appeal was filed against the convictions.
After the convictions, Kardashian thanked French authorities for pursuing the case.
She said the incident had left a lasting impact on her and her family but expressed hope that the legal process would provide accountability and allow those affected to move forward.
The 2016 robbery remains one of the most high-profile crimes involving the American celebrity, who was in Paris at the time for fashion events.
