The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Dr Mohammed Shehu, has called on public officials to recognise that corruption takes several forms beyond bribery and the diversion of government funds.
Shehu identified abuse of office, conflict of interest, favouritism and the manipulation of official procedures as practices that could also undermine public institutions and amount to corruption.
He spoke on Monday in Kaduna at the commencement of a five-day anti-corruption sensitisation and capacity-building workshop organised by the commission’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit for personnel from its North-West zonal and state offices.
The training, scheduled for September 14 to 18, 2026, is being held at Bafra Hotel, Kaduna, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
Represented at the event by the RMAFC Federal Commissioner for Kwara State and Provost of the Anti-Corruption Transparency Unit, Ismail Agaka, Shehu said the commission’s constitutional mandate placed it in a critical position within Nigeria’s fiscal management system.
He consequently urged its officials to uphold high ethical standards in carrying out their responsibilities.
According to him, corruption can be embedded in everyday official conduct, particularly when public officers abuse their positions, manipulate procedures or deliberately disregard established rules.
Shehu stressed the need for integrity to be reflected in the day-to-day activities of public servants rather than being treated merely as a principle to be discussed.
He also said the responsibility for combating corruption rested on individuals and institutions, rather than solely on anti-graft agencies.
The chairman urged participants to ensure that their decisions and handling of public resources complied with the principles of legality, accountability, fairness and transparency.
He added that public confidence in government institutions could only be sustained when officials performed their duties honestly and placed the public interest above personal considerations.
Shehu encouraged the participants to maximise the training by acquiring practical knowledge that would improve their professional conduct and contribute to better service delivery.
Earlier, the Chairman of the RMAFC ACTU and Director of Audit, Idris Musa, said the programme was aimed at strengthening the culture of integrity, transparency and accountability within the commission.
Musa urged the participants to engage fully with the facilitators and apply the knowledge gained from the training to their respective duties.
He warned against practices capable of compromising due process and eroding public confidence in government institutions.
Participants at the workshop expressed confidence that the training would enhance their understanding of ethical conduct and strengthen accountability in the performance of their official responsibilities.
