RIVERS POLICE LAUNCH INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED UNLAWFUL DETENTION

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of unlawful detention and related misconduct following an online publication drawing attention to the incident.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, directed an investigative panel to thoroughly examine the allegations and establish the facts surrounding the matter.

The Command called on individuals directly affected, as well as members of the public with credible information, to come forward and assist the investigation.

Concerned persons were advised to visit the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer or contact the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) through designated communication channels.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of fundamental human rights, stressing that detention beyond the legally prescribed period without due process is unlawful and will not be tolerated.

He warned that any police officer found engaging in unethical or unlawful conduct would face disciplinary action in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act.

The Command further reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, respect for human dignity and community-oriented policing, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

According to the statement, the rights, freedoms and dignity of all citizens remain a priority, while the Command continues to promote effective policing anchored on respect for human rights.

The Rivers State Police Command urged residents to make use of its Complaint Response Unit for complaints and information relating to the ongoing investigation.
