The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take urgent steps to address flooding affecting communities across the state.
Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, made the call during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas.
Persistent rainfall has caused flooding in several communities, with some residential buildings reportedly submerged and residents facing increasing hardship.
The inspection followed a motion raised during Monday’s plenary by the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Somiari-Stewart, drawing the attention of lawmakers to the worsening situation.
Amaewhule said the Assembly decided to visit affected communities to assess the extent of the flooding and its impact on residents.
He acknowledged that the state government may have taken measures to address the situation but said additional intervention was necessary because of the scale of the problem.
The Speaker urged Fubara to deploy available state resources to provide immediate relief to affected residents and take measures to mitigate further flooding.
He said urgent intervention was necessary to reduce the hardship faced by families whose homes and communities have been affected.
The Assembly called for a coordinated response to the flooding as persistent rainfall continues to affect parts of Rivers State.
