Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu and other political office holders to spend their holidays within Nigeria to gain first-hand experience of some of the challenges confronting citizens.
Obi made the call following a two-day visit to Sokoto State, where he visited the Ramin Kura Internally Displaced Persons camp in Sokoto North Local Government Area.
The former Anambra State governor said more than 1,000 displaced persons were living at the camp under difficult conditions.
He said some of the displaced families were staying in makeshift shelters and thatched structures, with several people sharing limited accommodation.
Obi also raised concerns about inadequate sanitation facilities, access to healthcare and educational facilities for children at the camp.
He called for urgent government intervention to improve living conditions for displaced persons and address the insecurity that forced families from their communities.
Obi said political leaders should spend more time travelling within Nigeria, arguing that doing so would enable them to better understand the circumstances facing citizens in different parts of the country.
He specifically urged Tinubu and other public office holders to consider spending their holidays within the country rather than travelling abroad.
Obi has previously criticised Tinubu’s foreign vacations and argued that domestic travel by political leaders could also support Nigeria’s tourism sector and local economy.
The visit formed part of Obi’s engagements in Sokoto State, where he also met traditional leaders and participated in political activities ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election.
