Academic activities were temporarily disrupted at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, following a clash between suspected rival cult groups on Monday.
The police identified the groups involved as rival gangs, while sources linked the confrontation to the Vikings and Clansmen confraternities.
The clash reportedly occurred during the ongoing Students’ Union Government Week, sending students fleeing from the campus as gunshots were heard.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying its operatives responded promptly to a distress call and restored calm.
Police spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, said no lives were lost, and no police officer fired any shot during the operation. She added that members of the groups fled the scene and investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend those involved.
Rights activists, Charles Jaja and Prince Wiro, expressed concern over what they described as recurring cult-related violence in the institution.
They called on the university management and the Rivers State Government to strengthen security measures, warning that repeated clashes could undermine students’ safety and public confidence in the institution.
The police said security measures had been reinforced while efforts continued to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
