The Department of State Services, DSS, has released a carpenter, Mustapha Marwana, after investigations cleared him of any connection with the abduction and killing of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Marwana, a native of Katsina State, was arrested in connection with the May 15 attack on three schools in Oriire, during which 39 pupils and seven teachers were abducted.
A security source familiar with the case said a DSS investigative panel found no evidence linking Marwana to the Ansaru terrorist group blamed for the attack.
According to the source, the investigation established that Marwana had no links to the group’s membership, financing, logistics or operational activities.
Following the findings, DSS Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, ordered his immediate release and approved an initial N3 million compensation to assist him in meeting his immediate needs and restarting his livelihood.
Marwana was subsequently released to his lawyer, Oghene Forgive.
The lawyer commended the DSS leadership for reviewing the case and ensuring his client’s release after he was cleared of the allegations.
The development followed investigations into the Oriire school attack, in which two of the abducted victims were killed before the remaining captives were freed on July 10 during a military operation.
Several suspects linked to the attack have since been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja, with three already sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to terrorism-related charges.
