Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Unyime Idem, has warned residents against paying illegal fees to individuals posing as electricians for electricity connections.

Idem, who also chairs the House Committee on Public Procurement, said his attention had been drawn to reports that some persons were demanding ₦20,000 as registration fees from communities captured under the first phase of an ongoing electricity rehabilitation project.

In a statement, the lawmaker described such demands as fraudulent, stressing that he had not authorised any individual or group to collect money from constituents for electricity connection.

He clarified that the electricity project is being executed free of charge for beneficiaries, noting that no payment is required to access the public power supply.

“The project is being executed free of charge to beneficiaries, and no payment whatsoever is required for connection,” the statement said.

He urged residents to disregard such demands and report anyone involved in the illegal activity to security agencies.

Idem explained that the project is fully funded as a personal intervention aimed at restoring electricity to communities in the constituency after over 18 years of power outage.

He, however, noted that households are responsible for the cost of internal wiring and replacement of faulty appliances, adding that no other charges are applicable.

The lawmaker further disclosed that while communities in the first phase are already enjoying improved power supply, plans are underway for the commencement of the second phase of the project.

He assured constituents that the project would be implemented in phases until all communities in Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency are covered.

Idem also urged communities yet to benefit to remain patient, reaffirming his commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of the people.
