The Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Catherine, have expressed their sympathy to victims of the devastating flash floods that have hit areas along the Nepal-China border.
The royal couple, in a statement issued on Thursday, said they were thinking of those affected by the disaster, which has left hundreds dead or missing.
“The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking. We are thinking of everyone caught up in this terrible disaster,” they said.
They also expressed concern for families waiting for information about missing relatives and commended rescue workers involved in the emergency response.
“Our thoughts are especially with the families facing an unbearable wait for news and with the communities confronting such immense loss,” the statement said.
“We are incredibly grateful to all those working in such dangerous conditions to rescue people and support those affected.”
The statement came hours after King Charles III and Queen Camilla also expressed their condolences over the disaster.
The King said he and the Queen were “heartbroken” by the flooding and conveyed their sympathy to families who had lost loved ones or were still waiting for news of relatives and friends.
Reports indicate that more than 900 people are missing while at least 359 people have died following the flash floods in the Nepal-Tibet border region.
Rescue teams have continued operations to search for survivors as homes, roads and bridges were reportedly destroyed by the floods.
The flooding has particularly affected Rasuwa district, while neighbouring Nuwakot district has also reported significant impacts.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the disaster was linked to glacial collapse and debris flow, with warnings that further flooding could remain a risk.
Nepal authorities said hundreds of foreign nationals were among those missing, including 33 British nationals.
Meanwhile, Prince William, Catherine and their three children reportedly left Balmoral Castle on Thursday after spending about a week there.
Their departure came a day after Prince Harry and Meghan arrived in the United Kingdom. The Prince and Princess of Wales have not publicly commented on Harry and Meghan’s return.
The royal family’s statements have instead focused on the humanitarian situation in Nepal and the ongoing rescue efforts following the disaster.
