Ahead of the resumption of schools on Monday, April 20, 2026, the Akwa Ibom State Universal Basic Education Board (AK-SUBEB) has held a strategic meeting with Head Teachers of public primary schools in the Uyo Senatorial District, aimed at addressing critical gaps and strengthening the delivery of basic education in the State.
The meeting, which brought together key education stakeholders, focused on improving academic standards, enhancing teacher accountability, and ensuring a smooth and effective resumption of academic activities.
Speaking during the session, the Executive Chairman of AK-SUBEB, Dr. Anietie Etuk, charged Head Teachers to remain focused and committed to raising standards at the foundational level of education.
He expressed concern over what he described as a growing lackadaisical attitude among some teachers, particularly in the area of absenteeism, and cautioned against condoning or shielding erring staff.
Dr. Etuk reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to repositioning the basic education sector, noting that deliberate efforts are being made to improve learning outcomes and overall performance across public primary schools in the State.
He further urged Head Teachers to be intentional and impactful in their leadership roles, stressing that their contributions should leave lasting positive impressions on their schools even after their tenure.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Board, Dr. (Mrs.) Roseline Mfon, advised Head Teachers to organize pre-resumption meetings with relevant stakeholders, including teachers and parents, to effectively communicate plans for the new term.
She emphasized the need for teaching and learning activities to commence immediately on the first day of resumption to encourage punctuality and student participation.
In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPHON), Itu Chapter, Mr. Sunday Asuquo, and the Education Secretary of Nsit Ibom Local Government Area commended the Board’s proactive approach and pledged their continued support towards improving the quality of basic education.
They noted that the current leadership of AK-SUBEB has significantly enhanced teacher morale through improved welfare initiatives, describing it as a marked improvement compared to previous administrations.
