The Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo has formally resigned from office, citing his intention to fully pursue his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State ahead of the upcoming elections.

In a letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the minister expressed “a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.

The resignation, which takes effect on April 30, 2026, is designed to allow for a smooth transition and handover of responsibilities within the ministry.

The correspondence was routed through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja.

The outgoing minister thanked the president for the trust placed in him, noting that his tenure provided an opportunity to contribute to reforms in Nigeria’s power sector widely regarded as a critical pillar for industrial growth and economic transformation.

He explained that his decision was driven by a long-standing political ambition to govern Oyo State, an aspiration he said dates back to 2016 during his time as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He recalled resigning from the apex bank in 2018 to initially pursue the same goal.

The minister also referenced provisions in the amended Electoral Act 2026, which require political office holders to step down before contesting elective positions, describing his resignation as both “appropriate and necessary” in compliance with the law.

The development adds to a growing list of political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle, as key figures reposition for state and national contests.

Further announcements regarding a replacement at the Ministry of Power are expected from the presidency in the coming days.
