The Independent National Electoral Commission has disclosed that more than 9.32 million young Nigerians were newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figure on Wednesday in Abuja during the investiture of nine INEC Youth Ambassadors.
Amupitan, who was represented by National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus, said the figure underscored the importance of young Nigerians in the country’s electoral process.
He said increased youth participation could contribute to electoral outcomes and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
The INEC chairman said the appointment of the nine youth ambassadors was part of the commission’s efforts to strengthen engagement with young Nigerians.
According to him, young people are more likely to engage with electoral information when it is communicated through credible and relatable voices within their communities and social networks.
Amupitan urged the ambassadors to use their platforms to promote voter awareness, peaceful and responsible participation and accurate electoral information.
He also tasked them with helping to counter misinformation and encouraging young Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process while maintaining integrity and impartiality.
The nine ambassadors were drawn from the entertainment sector, including film, music and comedy.
Meanwhile, INEC has presented a Certificate of Return to Kallamu Usman Maijama’a following his victory in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency by-election held on September 19.
Maijama’a won the election with 41,121 votes.
The certificate was presented at INEC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday by National Commissioner Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (retd.), who represented the INEC Chairman.
