The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday amid widespread public outrage triggered by a viral video of the incident.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence provided by members of the public. The suspect was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Edafe explained that officers were deployed to take the suspect into custody, but the operation took a tragic turn when the team leader allegedly violated established procedures.

“The police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” the statement read.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the act, describing it as an extrajudicial killing of the 28-year-old suspect. He immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba.
Edafe further stated that the officer has since been moved to Abuja, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for possible sanctions and prosecution.
“The officer has been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” he said.
Reaffirming the command’s stance, Edafe emphasised its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights, noting a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial conduct.
“The Command emphasises respect for the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust. It maintains zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial actions,” he added.
The police commissioner also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
“The Commissioner of Police extends his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that the Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement added.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation after a 90-second video surfaced on social media, showing a bound suspect being shot in broad daylight by armed men identified as police officers in civilian attire.

In the footage, the victim is seen lying on the ground with his hands and legs tied, pleading for his life and offering to cooperate with the officers. Despite his appeals and attempts to provide information, he was shot in the leg and subsequently in the head.
The disturbing video has intensified calls for accountability and police reform, as authorities urge residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
