The Nigeria Police Force has commenced disciplinary proceedings against a police officer captured in a viral social media video displaying conduct described as inconsistent with the standards and ethics of the Force.
The officer, identified as a Sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti State, has been taken into custody following the circulation of the footage online.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Police said the Ekiti State Command swiftly identified and detained the officer immediately after becoming aware of the video.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer as part of the disciplinary process.
The Police explained that the assessment is a mandatory requirement aimed at addressing both the alleged misconduct and any possible underlying health concerns.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the conduct displayed in the video, describing it as a gross violation of the discipline, professionalism and decorum expected of officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward substance abuse and any behaviour that undermines the integrity of the uniform or erodes public trust in the institution,” the statement added.
The Police assured members of the public of its commitment to maintaining professionalism and discipline within the Force.
