The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has commissioned two strategic election support facilities in Osun State and charged electoral officials to deliver a credible, peaceful and transparent governorship election on August 15.
The newly inaugurated facilities: the INEC Decides Studio and a BVAS Storage Facility, are intended to strengthen election communication and ensure the secure management of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices ahead of the poll.
The projects were initiated by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola.
Following the commissioning, Amupitan held a meeting with Electoral Officers from the 30 Local Government Areas of the state, where he underscored the critical role of field officials in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
He urged the officers to ensure the timely opening of polling units, warning that delays would attract sanctions, while outstanding performance would be recognised and rewarded.
The INEC Chairman assured the officials of the Commission’s continued commitment to staff welfare and the provision of infrastructure needed for efficient election management across the country.
Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Babalola, and the Supervising National Commissioner for Osun State, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, assured the INEC Chairman that the Commission had concluded preparations for the election and was fully committed to conducting a free, fair and conclusive governorship poll.
Amupitan also disclosed that INEC would sustain engagements with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) and other stakeholders to guarantee the safety of electoral personnel and sensitive materials throughout the exercise.
He further cautioned election officials against misinformation and disinformation, urging them to remain professional and ensure that the Osun governorship election sets a new benchmark for future off-cycle elections in Nigeria.
