The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old student of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) in connection with a viral video showing gunfire from a moving vehicle in Calabar.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Ejim Ejim, was arrested after the video circulated on social media in the early hours of 17 September 2026.
The command’s spokesperson, Sunday Eitokpah, an assistant superintendent of police, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Calabar on Saturday.
According to Mr Eitokpah, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, ordered the immediate identification and arrest of those involved after the footage emerged online.
He said operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, tracked the vehicle seen in the video at about 11:30 p.m. on 17 September.
The police said the driver of the vehicle was arrested first, and information obtained during questioning led investigators to a hotel in Calabar, where Mr Ejim was subsequently arrested.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations identified Mr Ejim as a key suspect in the incident.
The police alleged that the suspect identified himself during questioning as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity and admitted to being the person seen firing a gun in the video.
The police, however, said the investigation was ongoing.
Mr Ejim allegedly told investigators that he had taken part in a sign-out activity on the day of the incident and claimed that another suspected member of the group handed him the pistol allegedly used in the video.
The command said detectives were working to identify and arrest other people connected to the incident.
It added that investigators were also examining how the firearm was obtained and the circumstances surrounding its possession.
The police commissioner ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and warned against the unlawful discharge of firearms in public places.
The command said such acts posed a serious threat to public safety and security.
It also assured residents that efforts were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bring anyone found culpable before the law.
