The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Chapter, has suspended its Secretary, Dr Jimoh Hassan, alongside other members of the State Officers Committee over alleged constitutional infractions.

The decision was taken at an Emergency State Executive Council meeting according to a statement signed by the Lagos NMA Chairman, Dr Babajide Saheed, and Acting Secretary, Dr Olusola Soyinka Jnr.

Following the suspension, Dr Soyinka Jnr has been appointed in an acting capacity.

The association said the affected officials were sanctioned for their involvement in what it described as an unconstitutional gathering held on April 18, 2026, at Hall 36, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

According to the statement, the actions of Dr Hassan and others violated provisions of the NMA Lagos State Rules and Regulations as well as the national constitution of the association.

“The decision was unanimously taken by the Emergency State Executive Council to protect the integrity of the Association and enhance accountability,” the statement added.

However, the crisis follows a leadership dispute within the chapter, as Dr Babajide Saheed was reportedly removed from office during an emergency general meeting on April 18, 2026, with Dr Temidire Ewonowo said to have emerged as chairman.

Saheed has rejected the claim of his removal, describing it as unconstitutional and lacking legal basis, insisting that due process as provided in the NMA constitution was not followed.

He maintained that any such move was “null, void and of no effect,” adding that it does not reflect the established procedures governing the association.
