The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political thugs and their supporters against destroying or defacing campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has consequently directed commissioners of police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to investigate reported incidents and ensure that offenders are arrested and prosecuted.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, following reports of increasing destruction of political campaign materials across the country.

According to the police, deliberately tearing, defacing or unlawfully removing campaign materials belonging to political opponents constitutes an act of political intolerance and may amount to a criminal offence.
The Force cited Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law as relevant provisions dealing with malicious damage and mischief.
It stressed that political differences or allegiance to a particular party did not justify damaging another candidate’s property or interfering with lawful campaign activities.
The police maintained that all political parties and candidates, regardless of their affiliations or status, were entitled to equal protection under the law.
Under the directive, state police commissioners are expected to adopt preventive measures, investigate complaints and take appropriate action against individuals linked to the destruction of campaign materials.
The Force also warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate such activities could face prosecution where evidence establishes their involvement.
It emphasised that responsibility for politically motivated vandalism would not be limited to those directly involved in damaging campaign materials.

The police urged political parties, candidates and supporters to conduct their activities peacefully, respect opposing political views and avoid actions capable of provoking violence.
It further warned that intimidation, destruction of property and other criminal activities must not be allowed to undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the election period and protecting the rights of candidates to engage in lawful political activities.
With preparations for the 2027 elections gathering momentum, the police called for restraint and cooperation among political stakeholders.
It maintained that individuals found responsible for destroying campaign materials would face legal consequences in accordance with applicable laws.
