Peru is awaiting India’s response to a counterproposal as negotiations for a free trade agreement between both countries enter their final stage, with Lima hoping to conclude the deal in 2027.

Peru’s Minister for Trade, Rogers Valencia, said the country had submitted the counterproposal to India as both sides work to finalise the agreement.

“Negotiating with India is a fairly lengthy process,” Valencia said, adding that Peru hoped the treaty would be signed next year.

India has emerged as Peru’s second-largest export destination this year, overtaking the United States, largely due to increased gold shipments.

Official data showed that Peruvian exports to India reached $6.184 billion between January and July, representing a 152 per cent increase from the same period in 2025.

Exports to the United States stood at $5.971 billion during the period, up 21 per cent, while China remained Peru’s largest export market, driven mainly by copper and other minerals.

Peru and India began negotiations for a free trade agreement in 2017. Peru, one of the world’s major copper producers, expects total exports to exceed $100 billion this year, compared with about $91 billion in 2025.

Valencia also said Peru was negotiating with the United States over higher tariffs introduced in July on several Peruvian products.

He said the new duties could affect Peru’s exports, particularly agricultural products such as blueberries, grapes and avocados, as well as textiles.

Peru had previously traded largely tariff-free with the United States under a 2009 agreement.

Valencia said he expected to travel to the United States later this month with President Keiko Fujimori for the United Nations General Assembly, where Lima plans to continue discussions with Washington on tariffs and bilateral trade relations.

The proposed Peru-India trade agreement is expected to strengthen commercial ties between the two economies and expand market access for their exporters.
