The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over what it described as a gradual erosion of democratic freedoms in Akwa Ibom State and across Nigeria, as the nation marks Democracy Day.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ewa Okpo, the party said June 12 remains a reminder of Nigeria’s democratic struggle following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest in the country’s history.
The PDP recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari officially declared June 12 as Democracy Day in 2018 in honour of democratic sacrifices and heroes of the struggle.

However, the party expressed concern over what it termed “troubling developments” in the country’s democratic space, alleging that citizens are increasingly facing restrictions on political expression and participation.
It specifically claimed that under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at both national and state levels, civic space has become constrained and opposition voices are being subjected to intimidation and persecution.
According to the statement, such trends undermine the spirit of democracy and the ideals for which June 12 is commemorated.
The party called for the protection of civil liberties and urged citizens to remain committed to democratic principles, unity, and active participation in governance.
The PDP also expressed solidarity with individuals it said are facing hardship due to their political views, urging them to remain steadfast.

Quoting from the Bible, Exodus 14:13, the party encouraged supporters to remain resolute, insisting that democratic freedoms would ultimately prevail.
The statement reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to what it described as the struggle for “true democracy” and good governance in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large.
