The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has thrown its weight behind the indefinite strike by resident doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), urging the Lagos State Government to urgently address the workers’ outstanding welfare issues.
In a statement signed by its President, Dr Mohammad Usman Suleiman, and Secretary-General, Dr Shuabu Ibrahim, NARD said it was in “full solidarity” with the LASUTH Association of Resident Doctors (LASUTH-ARD) over the industrial action.
The national body said the strike followed prolonged delays in resolving welfare concerns despite previous agreements and assurances between the doctors and relevant authorities.
NARD called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Ministry of Health to intervene directly and urgently to resolve the dispute.
Among the issues raised by the association is the alleged non-payment of specialist allowance to Grade Level 14 resident doctors, particularly Senior Registrars 1. NARD said the implementation of the allowance had not kept pace with applicable federal standards.
The association also cited outstanding salary shortfalls and advancement arrears allegedly owed to doctors since last year, as well as 25 months of arrears linked to the delayed implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table.
NARD further alleged discrepancies and irregularities in recent salary payments, demanding the immediate release of comprehensive salary breakdowns to clarify the payments made to affected doctors.
The association said resident doctors had demonstrated patience and continued working despite the unresolved issues, but the prolonged delays had ultimately forced them to embark on industrial action.
“Our colleagues at LASUTH have shown immense patience and dedication, but the persistent failure to honour agreements leaves them with no choice,” NARD said.
The national body warned that a prolonged dispute could further disrupt healthcare delivery and threaten the stability of medical services across Lagos State.
It therefore urged the state government to engage LASUTH-ARD in constructive negotiations, resolve the outstanding welfare concerns and take urgent steps to end the strike.
NARD also appealed for an immediate negotiated settlement, stressing that restoring normal medical services must go hand in hand with addressing the welfare obligations owed to the affected doctors.
