The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. James Olusola Odedeji, has welcomed the rescue of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State, urging the Federal Government to strengthen security and ensure the protection of lives and property across Nigeria.

Odedeji expressed relief over the development on Friday, October 9, during the dedication of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Ofin, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The prospective corps members were reportedly abducted on October 1 along the Owerri–Onitsha Road while travelling from Ibadan to their orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

The police subsequently announced their rescue on Wednesday, bringing an end to their ordeal.

Reacting to the development, the bishop described their release as a welcome development and an occasion for thanksgiving, particularly against the backdrop of persistent kidnapping and other security challenges in the country.

He expressed concern that many Nigerians continued to live in fear, with insecurity restricting their freedom of movement and affecting their daily activities.

Odedeji urged the government and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to prevent kidnappings, protect travellers and restore public confidence in the country’s security system.

He also called for prayers for individuals involved in kidnapping and other violent crimes, expressing hope that they would abandon criminal activities.

Beyond insecurity, the cleric appealed to the government to address the economic difficulties confronting Nigerians, particularly rising living costs, hunger and declining purchasing power.

He observed that many households were struggling to meet basic needs, adding that church leaders regularly encountered people seeking assistance because of financial hardship.

According to him, Nigerians deserve a peaceful and economically stable environment where they can work, support their families and pursue legitimate livelihoods without fear.

Speaking during the church dedication, Odedeji encouraged Christians to remain committed to their faith and the responsibility of sharing the Gospel.

He said the dedication of the church should inspire renewed devotion, spiritual growth and greater participation in evangelism.

The bishop also charged the parish vicar, Rev. Olumuyiwa Ogunsanya, and his wife, Olusola, to remain steadfast in their Christian responsibilities and provide exemplary spiritual leadership.

He urged members of the congregation to support the church’s mission through service, unity and commitment to Christian teachings.

The ceremony attracted clergy, church officials, parishioners and other worshippers from across the diocese.

A significant highlight of the event was the elevation of Rev. Ogunsanya to the rank of canon in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).

The announcement was received with enthusiasm by members of the congregation, who celebrated the recognition of his service to the church.
