The Nigerian military says more than 40 suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have been killed in an airstrike conducted by the Air Component of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, in Borno State.

The task force’s Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

According to Goni, the operation targeted a suspected ISWAP enclave in Badu Village, south of Gudumbali, in Guzamala Local Government Area, over the weekend.

He explained that the airstrike followed intelligence reports indicating that suspected insurgents had assembled in the area to coordinate attacks against troops operating within Sector 3.

The military said its Air Component conducted aerial surveillance to assess suspected insurgent movements before carrying out the operation.

Goni stated that the strike targeted identified positions associated with the insurgents, including suspected hideouts and logistics facilities.

The military described the operation as part of continuing efforts to disrupt insurgent activities and prevent planned attacks on troops and communities in the North-East.

The reported casualty figure of more than 40 insurgents was provided by the military and has not been independently verified.

Operation HADIN KAI continues to conduct security operations across Borno and neighbouring states as part of efforts to counter insurgency and protect affected communities.
