President Bola Tinubu has welcomed reports of reduced transportation fares along some routes in the Federal Capital Territory following the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses.
The development followed the circulation of a video highlighting the Federal Government and Nigeria Governors’ Forum’s Affordable CNG Transport Programme.
In the video, commuters claimed that the fare from Masaka to Berger in Abuja had dropped from ₦1,500 to ₦500 on CNG-powered buses, representing a reduction of ₦1,000 or approximately 66.7 per cent.

Reacting to the reported reduction in a post on his official X account on Sunday, Tinubu acknowledged the financial relief that lower transportation costs could provide to households.
“I know what that means when you have a family to feed, bills to pay and other responsibilities waiting at home,” the President said.
The CNG transport initiative is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to encourage the adoption of alternative vehicle fuels and reduce transportation costs following the removal of petrol subsidies.
CNG-powered vehicles use compressed natural gas instead of conventional petrol or diesel, offering operators an alternative fuel option that can reduce operating expenses under favourable pricing and maintenance conditions.
The reported fare reduction has attracted mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians welcoming the initiative as a potential source of relief for commuters.
Others questioned whether the lower fares were available across additional routes and whether the programme could deliver sustained savings to a larger number of passengers.

The ₦500 fare cited in the video relates specifically to the Masaka–Berger route and should not be interpreted as a uniform transport fare across Abuja.
The wider impact of the programme will depend on the number of CNG-powered buses deployed, route coverage, fuel availability and the ability of operators to maintain affordable fares.
Although commuters featured in the video reported substantial savings, independent confirmation of the prevailing fares across all participating routes was not available.
