Governor Bassey Otu has approved N1.96 billion as car grants for the 196 ward councillors across Cross River State.
Under the initiative, each councillor will receive N10 million, bringing the total value of the grant package to N1.96 billion.
The state government said the approval is aimed at improving the mobility of councillors and enhancing their effectiveness in carrying out legislative, oversight and other official responsibilities at the grassroots level.

The beneficiaries are the 196 councillors representing wards across the 18 local government areas of the state.
According to the government, the grant forms part of efforts to strengthen local governance and support elected officials in the discharge of their duties.
The development has generated mixed reactions among residents and political stakeholders.
Supporters of the initiative described it as a step towards improving the capacity of local government legislators and ensuring better service delivery at the grassroots.
However, some critics have called for prudent management of public resources, citing prevailing economic challenges and competing developmental needs within the state.

The state government maintains that the intervention aligns with its commitment to supporting local government institutions and enhancing governance at the community level.
