Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have repelled an isolated terrorist attack on a military position at Charlie 13 in Monguno, Borno State.
The attack, which occurred late on April 12, 2026, led to an intense exchange of fire, forcing the insurgents to retreat, while troops maintained control of the location.
However, tragedy struck shortly after the encounter as the Commanding Officer, who was en route to the frontline to assess the situation, ran into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The explosion fatally affected his vehicle, resulting in his death alongside six other soldiers.

In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the fallen officer was described as a courageous leader who demonstrated exceptional bravery and commitment to duty.
The statement noted that his decision to personally move to the troops’ location, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest standards of military leadership, marked by selflessness and a willingness to lead from the front.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officer and the six personnel, describing them as gallant servicemen who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.
“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement added.

The military also reaffirmed its resolve to sustain ongoing operations against insurgents in the North East, despite the setback.
