The Ondo State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United States-based transportation company ADMINSERV to introduce electric buses and charging infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and promote alternative energy in the state.

The agreement, announced on Monday, provides for the initial deployment of five electric buses and the installation of charging facilities at selected bus stops in Akure, the state capital.

The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, disclosed the development following the signing of the agreement in his office.

Ogunyemi explained that the initiative was designed to provide residents with a potentially more affordable transportation option while supporting the growing adoption of electric vehicles.

He said the proposed charging stations would not be restricted to buses operating under the scheme, as private individuals and organisations using electric vehicles would also be permitted to access the facilities.

According to him, the government intends to extend the project to other local government areas after the initial phase.

The transport adviser further disclosed that the state was pursuing electric mobility alongside compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to diversify transportation energy sources.

He identified the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and Ore as locations associated with ongoing CNG infrastructure development, with plans to improve alternative fuel accessibility across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The Managing Director of ADMINSERV, Peter Nnamani, said the company was developing technology-driven transportation solutions intended to improve affordability, passenger safety and service reliability.

Nnamani disclosed that the proposed transport system would incorporate an artificial intelligence-enabled application to monitor buses and drivers, improve punctuality and support operational efficiency.

He projected that monthly transportation expenditure for users could decline from approximately ₦9,000 to between ₦5,000 and ₦6,000 if the proposed system operates as planned.

The estimate represents a potential monthly saving of between ₦3,000 and ₦4,000 per commuter, although actual savings would depend on fares, travel patterns and implementation.

The company also expects the initiative to create employment opportunities through the construction, operation and maintenance of charging facilities, alongside the recruitment of bus drivers.

While the agreement establishes a framework for cooperation, the government has not announced a confirmed date for the commencement of commercial electric bus operations.

The project represents another effort by a Nigerian state government to explore alternative transportation technologies amid concerns over rising mobility costs and environmental sustainability.
