A Celestial Church of Christ evangelist, Abidemi Odukoya, and his wife, Adenike, have died following separate incidents reportedly linked to an alleged domestic altercation at their residence in the Akinode/Ibogun community of Ogun State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 25, after an argument between the couple allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to accounts from residents, Adenike was found unconscious and seriously injured inside the couple’s home, while her husband was said to have left the residence.
A former Chairman of the Community Development Association in the area, Adejimi Olawumi, said residents alerted him after hearing cries for help.
Speaking in a video shared by Arole TV on Wednesday, Olawumi said he went to the residence and found Adenike lying in a pool of blood.
He explained that residents attempted to arrange transportation to take her to a hospital, but there was no vehicle immediately available.
Olawumi said the couple’s son, who was in another room at the time, told residents that he did not witness what happened between his parents.
He added that members of the CDA later realised that Odukoya was not at home and launched a search for him.
According to Olawumi, the community later received information that the cleric had been knocked down by a vehicle in the Ifo area of Ogun State.
He said police officers took Odukoya to a hospital, where his identity was subsequently confirmed.
The CDA chairman said arrangements were then made to recover the cleric’s remains and return them to the community.
Olawumi added that although residents were aware that the couple occasionally had disagreements, they were usually able to resolve their differences.
Meanwhile, the evangelist’s younger sister, in a video circulating online, alleged that the couple had experienced repeated domestic disputes before their deaths.
She claimed that the couple had visited her around April following an earlier confrontation and that the matter was eventually resolved at a police station.
The woman said she had advised them to exercise patience and avoid fighting, adding that other people had previously intervened to settle their disagreements.
She said the family was eventually alerted to the deaths after one of the siblings received a telephone call about the incident.
The remains of the couple were subsequently buried separately. Adenike was reportedly buried on the day of the incident, while Odukoya was buried on Wednesday, September 2.
Footage seen after the incident showed some clerics performing burial rites over Odukoya’s remains at an undisclosed location.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths remained unclear as of the time of filing the report.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, confirmed the incident when contacted on Wednesday.
