The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has officially announced former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi announced on Saturday shortly after being formally confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate during the NDC’s official declaration ahead of next year’s polls.

The development signals a major political alignment between two prominent opposition figures as they prepare to challenge the ruling political establishment.
The announcement follows recent political developments involving both leaders, who left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the NDC, citing internal disputes, divisions within the party structure, and ongoing legal issues affecting the platform.
Obi, a former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, is expected to lead the NDC’s campaign as the party positions itself for broader national appeal.
Kwankwaso, a two-term governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential northern political figures with a strong regional following.
Political observers are expected to closely monitor how the partnership reshapes opposition dynamics, voter mobilisation, and coalition-building efforts in the build-up to the 2027 election cycle.

The NDC is anticipated to unveil further campaign structures and strategic plans in the coming weeks as preparations intensify nationwide.
