The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has summoned native doctors, traditional priests and priestesses to an emergency meeting aimed at addressing the worsening security situation in Edo State and across Nigeria.
The invitation was contained in a statement issued by Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor.
According to the statement, the monarch expressed concern over the increasing level of insecurity and emphasised the need to explore traditional and cultural approaches alongside government efforts to restore peace and stability.

The Benin Traditional Council noted that the meeting would bring together key spiritual and traditional practitioners within the kingdom to deliberate on possible contributions to tackling insecurity.
It added that the gathering has been scheduled for 12 noon on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Oba’s palace in Benin City, and is expected to be treated with utmost urgency given the prevailing security challenges.
In a related development, the palace also announced a separate engagement with youth leaders known as Okaighele, scheduled to hold the following day at the same venue and time.

The move reflects growing concern among traditional authorities over rising cases of kidnapping, cult-related violence, and other security threats affecting Edo State and neighbouring regions.
