The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps has called on staff and corps members to recommit themselves to the ideals of national unity, service, and nation-building as the scheme marks its 53rd anniversary on Friday.

In a commemorative message issued to staff and corps members nationwide, the DG described the anniversary as the beginning of a “new chapter” in the history of the scheme, emphasising the responsibility of both serving and former members in sustaining the legacy of the NYSC.

“Every year opens a new chapter in the remarkable book of the NYSC’s history. Today, we inscribe the first words on the blank page, marking the 365 days of the 53rd chapter of our beloved scheme,” the DG stated.

The Director-General noted that current staff and corps members are not merely observers but active participants in shaping the future of the organisation, adding that past heroes of the scheme had laid a solid foundation that must be preserved and strengthened.

He commended members of staff for their dedication and commitment to the smooth running of the scheme, describing them as the backbone of the NYSC.

“Day after day, year after year, you ensure the smooth running of our operations, provide guidance, nurture growth, and maintain the high standards that define the NYSC,” he said.

As part of activities commemorating the anniversary, the management of the scheme introduced a Long Service Award aimed at recognising staff members who have served for up to 30 years. Beneficiaries, according to the DG, will receive certificates in appreciation of their loyalty and contributions to the organisation’s growth.

The DG also praised corps members for bringing fresh ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to the scheme annually, noting that their contributions continue to expand the impact of the NYSC across the country.

He urged all stakeholders to remain steadfast in promoting national cohesion and cultural integration.

“Let us all, staff and corps members alike, recommit ourselves to the ideals of unity, service, and nation-building. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping Nigeria one,” he added.

The NYSC was established in 1973 by the Federal Government as part of efforts to foster national unity and integration among Nigerian youths following the civil war.
