Algeria has announced plans to close its airspace to all civilian and military aircraft registered in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following the country’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Abu Dhabi.
The airspace restriction is expected to take effect from Friday, according to reports by Algerian media.
The move comes shortly after Algeria announced the termination of diplomatic relations with the UAE, accusing Abu Dhabi of engaging in what it described as “provocative and hostile actions.”
Algerian authorities said the decision followed the exhaustion of efforts to preserve bilateral relations, though they did not disclose specific incidents that led to the diplomatic rupture.
The latest measure further deepens tensions between the two countries, which have experienced strained relations in recent years over regional political issues and differing positions on matters including the Western Sahara dispute.
The UAE has expressed hope that the diplomatic split will be temporary, saying it remains committed to maintaining ties with the Algerian people and preserving shared interests.
Algeria’s decision to restrict UAE-registered flights marks another significant step in the deterioration of relations between the two North African and Gulf nations.
