The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has passed a vote of confidence on its State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, and members of the State Working Committee (SWC), commending their leadership within less than a year in office.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Union’s congress held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo.

The congress also approved a proposal to establish a “Wall of Fame” project to preserve the history and contributions of past leaders of the Union in Akwa Ibom State.

On governance issues, the union expressed concern over the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy as it affects some state agencies and parastatals, calling for the exemption of state-owned media organisations, including Pioneer Newspapers and the Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC). The union said the exemption would reduce operational bottlenecks and improve efficiency in media service delivery.

The congress commended the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health and Commissioner, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, for achievements recorded under the State Health Insurance Scheme. It also praised the Union’s Vice Chairman, Comrade Margaret Moore, for her role in public relations and advocacy around the programme.

It further applauded the planned distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets across the state as part of ongoing public health interventions.

The NUJ also lauded the state government for its partnership with the World Bank on the Nung Ukod Itam–Ekid Itam II road project, as well as for responding to appeals to reconstruct the Itam Market–Itu Local Government Secretariat road, which it described as previously hazardous for commuters.

As political activities intensify ahead of future elections, the congress urged political actors to adhere to democratic rules and avoid actions capable of disrupting peace and stability in the state, while also calling on journalists to maintain professionalism, objectivity and ethical standards in reporting.

The union received an interim report from its ad-hoc committee on the proliferation of splinter groups, warning the public to be cautious in dealing with unauthorised bodies claiming to represent the NUJ.

It also commended Comrade Charles Bassey for establishing CBS Internet Radio, the first of its kind in the state, expected to commence full transmission onszzz, May 29, 2026.
