The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has foiled an alleged attempt to traffic two minors in Kano State and arrested two suspects linked to the incident.
The suspects, identified as Sadiq Muhammad Abdullahi, 25, and Destiny Joseph, 18, were arrested at Wailari, Kano, following a report by a family member of one of the victims, the NSCDC said.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Abdullahi, preliminary investigations showed that the suspects allegedly lured the two children, aged 10 and 12, with promises of money and gifts in an attempt to move them to another location for financial gain.
The command said investigators were also examining allegations that the children may have been targeted for ritual purposes.
It added that one of the suspects allegedly took photographs of the minors as part of efforts to establish contact with a trafficking network before the plan was uncovered.
The NSCDC said the arrest followed a timely report by a family member who became suspicious of the suspects’ activities and alerted authorities.
Kano State Commandant Mohammed Hassan Agalama has directed the command’s Gender Unit to conduct a full investigation into the case and identify any other persons who may be connected to the alleged crime.
The suspects will be handed over to the Kano Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after the investigation for further action, the NSCDC said.
Agalama commended the family member for reporting the suspicious activity and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report cases involving possible child exploitation or trafficking.
