The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the disbursement of ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund.
The intervention is aimed at addressing infrastructure deficiencies, improving teaching and learning facilities and strengthening institutional capacity in the country’s higher education sector.
The Head of the Media Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie, disclosed the development in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.
According to the statement, the beneficiaries comprise 79 public universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education.
The breakdown shows that universities received the largest allocation of approximately ₦28.5 billion, while polytechnics and colleges of education were allocated ₦5.8 billion and ₦4.7 billion, respectively.
The ministry explained that the funds would enable beneficiary institutions to commence new projects or continue approved interventions targeting critical infrastructure gaps and other identified institutional needs.

It noted that the intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the quality of public tertiary education and address longstanding challenges affecting academic institutions.
The disbursement is also linked to the implementation of commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The agreement includes measures intended to address institutional funding challenges and improve conditions for teaching, learning and research.
According to the ministry, the financial intervention is expected to strengthen the capacity of beneficiary institutions to provide essential educational facilities and improve their learning environments.
It further emphasised the importance of effective coordination among the Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Education and the institutions receiving the funds.
Such coordination, the ministry explained, would help ensure that approved public expenditure translates into measurable improvements in educational infrastructure and institutional development.
The government also stressed the need for proper implementation of approved projects to achieve the objectives of the revitalisation programme.

Although the total allocation and number of beneficiaries have been announced, the statement did not provide a complete institution-by-institution breakdown or specific completion timelines for the projects.
The effectiveness of the intervention will therefore depend on how the funds are utilised and whether the approved projects deliver improvements in facilities and academic activities.
The latest disbursement represents another government funding intervention intended to address infrastructure challenges across Nigeria’s public tertiary education system.
