The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of sunny, cloudy and rainy conditions across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, the agency predicted sunny skies with patches of clouds across the northern region on Monday, with chances of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in several states.
In the North, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna during the morning hours. Later in the day, similar conditions are expected across parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
For the North Central region, NiMet forecasts morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected across parts of Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT.
In the South, moderate rainfall is expected over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa states during the morning hours, with thunderstorms and moderate rains forecast across the region later in the day.
For Tuesday, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected across parts of Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa.
The agency also forecast morning thunderstorms over parts of Niger, Kwara and the FCT, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected across the North Central region later in the day.
In the South, light morning rains are expected over parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the region in the afternoon and evening.
On Wednesday, NiMet forecast partly cloudy skies over the North, with possible morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe. More widespread thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across the region later in the day.
The North Central region is expected to experience sunny skies with patches of clouds in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains later in the day.
For the South, NiMet forecast a generally cloudy atmosphere, with chances of light morning rains over parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across the region later in the day.
The agency urged residents to take necessary precautions, particularly in areas where thunderstorms are expected, warning that strong winds could precede rainfall.
NiMet also warned that persistent rains in coastal areas of the South could trigger flash floods.
It advised motorists to avoid driving or wading through floodwaters and to refrain from driving during heavy rainfall.
The agency further advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets and stay away from tall trees during storms to avoid injuries from falling branches or trees.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet when planning their operations.
The agency urged members of the public to remain updated through its weather forecasts and advisories.
