The Nigerian Army has warned of possible coordinated attacks by terrorist groups, including the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, on churches, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable public facilities across the country.
The warning was contained in an intelligence communication dated September 9, 2026, signed by AM Sodiq and addressed to the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.
According to the document, intelligence indicated increased mobilisation of resources and fighters by terrorist groups for possible attacks in parts of the North-East, North-West, North-Central and some areas of the South-West.
The Army said the attacks could occur at any time and identified Catholic and Protestant churches, primary and secondary schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations as potential targets.
The military also disclosed that scores of armed fighters were reportedly moving from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State.
It further said suspected ISWAP operatives had commenced surveillance and reconnaissance of some identified targets, allegedly with the assistance of local collaborators.
The Army expressed particular concern over schools ahead of the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session.
It warned that terrorists could exploit the return of large numbers of students and teachers to inflict mass casualties and heighten public fear and insecurity.
The military said the timing of any potential attacks could also be linked to preparations for the 2027 general elections, with terrorists allegedly seeking to exploit crowded public spaces to cause widespread panic.
According to the intelligence assessment, the reported surveillance activities may indicate that the suspected groups have progressed beyond planning and could be undertaking preparations for attacks.
The Army consequently directed heightened vigilance, increased surveillance and stronger security measures around identified targets and other vulnerable public facilities.
It urged relevant security formations and stakeholders to remain alert and take necessary preventive measures to protect schools, places of worship, NYSC facilities and other potentially exposed locations.
