The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to strengthen professionalism and enhance operational effectiveness with the commencement of a four-day bi-annual Career Planning Seminar for soldiers at the Army War College Nigeria, Abuja.
The seminar, which began on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, is part of a deliberate strategy to equip personnel with the knowledge and tools required to build structured and successful military careers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the theme, “ Career Planning in the Nigerian Army for Soldiers: Charting a Successful Career Path from Enlistment to Retirement in a Joint Environment, ” as both timely and essential.
Represented by the Chief of Special Services and Programmes (Army), Major General Aminu Garba, the COAS emphasized that effective career planning is key to maximizing human resource potential in a rapidly evolving security landscape.
He noted that the changing nature of modern warfare requires a proactive, innovative, and resilient force capable of addressing complex and multi-dimensional threats.
According to him, deliberate career management plays a crucial role in improving productivity, efficiency, and overall operational success.
The Army Chief further stated that establishing clear and structured career paths for soldiers aligns with his Command Philosophy of transforming the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force, capable of operating effectively within joint and multi-agency environments.
He encouraged participants to actively engage in the seminar, highlighting its value as a platform for knowledge sharing, critical thinking, and meaningful contributions to career growth.
In his welcome address, the Chief of Personnel Management (Army), Major General Adewale Adekeye, underscored the importance of the initiative in strengthening career development within the force.
He explained that effective career planning relies on accurate data, comprehensive reporting, and informed analysis, adding that the seminar is designed to align individual aspirations with the broader objectives of the Nigerian Army.
The seminar is expected to enhance participants’ understanding of career progression while reinforcing the Army’s commitment to building a highly professional and efficient force.
