The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Republic of Benin as it joined the West African nation to celebrate its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The colourful celebration, held at the iconic Amazone Square in Cotonou, showcased military excellence and cultural heritage, with Nigeria’s participation underscoring the longstanding friendship, regional cooperation and shared commitment to peace and security between the two neighbouring countries.
Leading the Nigerian contingent was the Commander, 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, whose team delivered one of the most outstanding performances at the event.
The Nigerian troops impressed dignitaries and spectators with a flawless march past in both slow and quick time, displaying exceptional discipline, precision and coordination that earned applause from Benin’s President, Mr Romuald Wadagni, and other guests.
A major highlight of Nigeria’s participation was the Nigerian Army’s silent drill display, which featured remarkable dexterity, synchronisation and expert weapons handling. The performance drew applause and an ovation from thousands of spectators and distinguished guests at the national celebration.
Also present at the event were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mrs Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim; the Nigerian Defence Attaché to Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya; senior military officers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of friendly nations.
According to the Nigerian Army, the country’s participation reflected its commitment to military diplomacy, regional integration and the promotion of peace and stability across West Africa.
The Army noted that the contingent’s impressive outing projected the professionalism and operational excellence of the Nigerian military while reinforcing the deep historical, cultural and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
The participation, it added, symbolised the enduring spirit of friendship, mutual respect and regional solidarity that continues to define relations between both countries.
